Project brief -
Saral Sadan is an architectural concept that blends the heritage of traditional Indian havelis with contemporary design and sustainability, crafted to meet the needs of a multi-generational family. The residence combines an inviting and open design with zones for privacy and tranquility, especially for the
family’s elderly members. Inspired by traditional courtyards, verandahs, and bay windows, Saral Sadan creates a seamless indoor-out-door experience, ensuring ample natural light, ventilation, and passive cooling through strategic massing.
Design process -
The house is divided thoughtfully, with a ground floor space dedicated to the elderly parents and upper floors for the remaining family, fostering both communal and personal spaces. Using natural materials like rammed earth, the home achieves thermal comfort and an earthy aesthetic, supported by warm-toned interiors that complement its natural palette. Saral Sadan encapsulates the essence of a traditional yet timeless family home that is elegant, functional, and environmentally conscious.
Design description -
The core concept behind this project is to create a harmonious blend of sustainability, durability, and beauty. Rammed earth, known for its insulating properties and inherent strength, forms the foundation of the structure. The natural textures and earthy tones of the walls bring a sense of calm and organic warmth to the space. The courtyards, open spaces within the design are crucial to the project’s overall ethos. These areas are intentionally designed to allow for natural light penetration, cross-ventilation, and an unobstructed flow of air, which significantly reduces the need for artificial lighting and mechanical cooling systems. The open layout also encourages a strong connection between indoor and outdoor environments, promoting a sense of freedom and openness. The landscape design for the Haveli is a carefully curated blend of aesthetic beauty and sustainable functionality. From the welcoming
entrance water body to the private landscaped balconies, every element is designed to enhance the living experience while promoting a strong connection to nature. The half indoor-outdoor dining area and planters on auxiliary structures like the guard room further integrate greenery into the architecture, making the project a model of sustainable and thoughtful design.
